Academics Plus
This class is intended for students who want to improve their scores on the ACT English portions, English and Reading.
The writing portion of the ACT is optional and will be discussed and practiced.
This class is 9 weeks long and is opposite the Math ACT preparation course.
Students signed up for the ACT in September should enroll first in the class which will help them most in September.
There will not be official homework in this class; however, students are expected to study as much as is necessary to learn the information.

Book Information
There is no designated textbook for this class. Instead, we will have worksheets both from the Internet and printed out; we will discuss rules and strategies as they apply to the ACT test; we will have numerous quizzes; we will take practice ACT tests. There are potentially three English sections of the ACT test: English, Reading, and Writing. The English portion deals a great deal with grammar and usage. The reading section deals mostly with sentence construction, meaning and interpretation. The writing section is optional; check with your university to see if it is required.
Although there is no textbook, I recommend the Princeton Review as a study guide. The study strategies are excellent, and it provides a realistic look at the test itself and what can be expected from it. The practice questions in it aren't actual ACT questions, but they are modeled after the actual ones. The practice tests we take in class will be actual retired ACT tests.

Grades
Since this class will be a good deal of practice and few actual graded opportunities, available grades should be taken seriously.
There will be quizzes. They will be worth as many points as there are questions on the quiz (i.e., 5 questions, 5 points; 21 questions, 21 points).
The ACT practice tests will count; each grade is out of 36 points.
Attendance counts. 0-3 absences are no penalty; any more absences than 3 are deducted from the total possible 40 points.
Participation / Readiness grade (A,B,C,D equivalent) will be awarded at the end of the quarter.
